Does Islam degrade women?

man and woman

The most common claim that Islam's haters always made use of is that Islam mistreats, degrades women and gives more rights to men over them. And that women in Islamic countries are in desperate need of help and liberation from oppressive and conservative societies. Women are allegedly obliged to wear hijab and deprived of their right to study and work and the list of the like baseless claims goes very long.

In this article, I will not dive deep into details to demonstrate that the reality is totally different, as did many others who have tackled this issue before me, but rather focus on two main points: Muslim women in western countries and the percentage of women among the newly converted Muslims.

Muslim women in the western countries

If the aforementioned claims were valid, why do Muslim women in western countries not seek help and support that are available to them and within their easy reach then? In fact, the exact opposite happens. Muslim women across Europe, for example, are engaged in legal fights to access workplaces, schools, and universities with their hijab. A simple right, like the freedom to choose what to wear, is not available for Muslim women in some European countries such as France and Belgium.

The percentage of women among the newly converted Muslims.

Albeit the fierce media campaign to distort Islam’s attitude towards women, statistics show that more than half of the new converts to Islam are females. For example, a new study that was published in the British newspaper ‘the independent’ shows that three-quarters (75 percent) of Britons who embrace Islam are young white females.

conclusion:

The one million questions now are Why do Muslim women living in western countries stick to their hijab and risk losing their work or schools, and university seats? Why do females convert to Islam more than males? The answer to these questions is very simple. Islam does not mistreat women nor it degrade them as you were convinced by the hateful mass media. Then you should start reading about Islam from islamic sources before reading about it from haters' sources. Here is a link about women statues in Islam to start with.

There are no more reasons to fight or fear the unknown other.   Unfortunately, as you certainly know, this is not the case. we live in a completely opposite world. Every once in a w

How many of you've read the Quran? Garry Wills

The philosopher Garry Wills surprised his audience by this question. In one of his lectures the American philosopher Garry Wills embarrassed his audience by an unexpected question. Here is the video with the English transcription    The transcription:  As a Christian I consider Jesus a prophet but he’s the prophet of the one God there’s not several. So as a Christian I worship Allah.  How many of you have read the Quran ? A minority certainly.  Well, I do not want to shame you but I do. I think we should all be ashamed. You know we’re throwing our weight around the world where almost a quarter of the population are Muslims and not to know!  How can you say the Islamic state is a false construct if you don’t know what true Islam is. This book I published is the product of my shame. I was embarrassed, after the 9/11 I was talking with a group of academic friends we were wondering you know is this really an Islamic event (the 9/11 attack. And at some point people asked well, who here h

The Quran in brief

Muslims believe in all the heavenly sacred books, but they also believe that the Quran is the only holy book that remains intact. That’s why they only follow the instructions and guidance of the Quran. So, what is the Quran? Briefly put, it is the Islamic holy book. Muslims believe that the Quran is the words of God dictated to the prophet Muhammad -peace be upon him- in the Arabic language. The Quran is translated into many languages, but Muslims believe that the Arabic version has a subtle power that cannot be felt in or translated into other languages. Yet everyone can feel this power by listening to the Arabic reciting of the Quran even if he/she does not understand Arabic. Here are the English translations of some famous verses of the Quran: "This(the Quran) is an insight to humanity—a guide and a lesson to the God-fearing."  Ali 'Imran, verse  138   " It is not for Allah to take a son! Glory be to Him. When He decrees a matter, He simply tells it, “Be!” And it
